How does this work?
MailShield is fully Internet-based spam protection service, needing no installation of software or hardware at your premises. All the work is done in-line - before email reaches your network inbound, and immediately after it leaves your network outbound.

To enable the use of MailShield for your business, a simple change is needed to your domain MX records

Once these DNS changes have been applied, mail will enter the MailShield system before entering your network. Each inbound email is scanned in an instant in the following ways:

Stage 1 - Multiple anti-virus engines

Email passes through MailShield's commercial McAfee, F-Prot, Bitdefender and Sophos anti-virus engines in an instant, together idenotifying if an email contains a known virus or vulnerability. If a match is found, the email will be deleted and information logged about the virus or vulnerability identified for user review.

MailShield's anti-virus engines are updated every 30 minutes day and night to provide the very best protection for your business.

Stage 2 - Spam filtering - up to 145 tests in an instant

Spam filtering is definitely not for the faint hearted - a method of catching spam today may not work tomorrow. MailShield constantly evolves and adapts to catch the latest spam threats by applying a point-scoring system to each email scanned.

Up to 145 intelligent tests are carried out in a few seconds - these tests range from reverse DNS checking, to hyper-accurate advanced pattern matching and artificial intelligence technologies. Each positive test earns a number of points - these points accumulate into a spam result score - often between -10 and 70, sometimes beyond 100. In a normal set-up, all emails surpassing a score of 4 would be held as spam.

This method of point-scoring provides increased protection against false positives - in some cases emails innocently fail tests, however pass most others. Spam, however, would fail many more tests and the result would be an increased spam score.

Stage 3 - Intelligent secure archiving

Once the spam and virus tests have been performed, intelligent secure archiving can take place. At this stage, the mail remaining is classed as 'clean' and a copy is made available to the intelligent archiving system.

All email copies queued for archiving will be encrypted using 128bit technology and sent into the archives - these being the MailShield Central Archive, or a larger-scale dedicated archive server. You can even choose to have a copy of these emails delivered securely back to your site.

Your emails pass through stage 1, 2 and 3 in less than 4 seconds. After that, MailShield re-delivers your mail to your designated mail server as before, only this time cleaned and archived.
